In Israel, as in numerous countries of the global North, Filipina women have been recruited in large numbers for domestic work, typically as live-in caregivers for the elderly. The case of Israel is unique in that the country has a special significance as the Holy Land for the predominantly devout Christian Filipina women and is at the center of an often violent conflict, which affects Filipinos in many ways. In the literature, migrant domestic workers are often described as being subject to racial discrimination, labour exploitation and exclusion from mainstream society. Here, the author provides a more nuanced account and shows how Filipina caregivers in Israel have succeeded in creating their own collective spaces, as well as negotiating rights and belonging. While maintaining transnational ties and engaging in border-crossing journeys, these women seek to fulfill their dreams of a better life. Situating his study with respect to Freuds concept of the death drive, Bonikowski reads the repetitive symptoms of shell-shocked soldiers as a resistance to representation and narrative. In making this resistance part of their narratives, Ford, West, and Woolf broaden our understanding of the traumatic effects of war, exploring the possibility of a connection between the trauma of war and the trauma of sexuality. Parades End, The Return of the Soldier, and Mrs. Dalloway are all structured around the relationship between men and women. Instead, the novels underscore the divisions within the home and the self, drawing on the traumatic effects of shell shock to explore the link between the public events of history and the intimate traumas of the relations between self and other.
So I was entranced by Blipsoak01 and much less by Seven Controlled Vocabularies. I read everything I can find that mingles novels, poems, and images, from Roddy Doyles memoir of his parents to Samantha Foxs memoirs, Anna Carsons Nox, of course Sebald, Frisch, Foer, and many others. In that diverse field this isnt an especially interesting contribution. The choices are consistently part of the recent art-world interest in the everyday, the mundane, the suburban, the overlooked, the faintly nostalgic. And although this is not an uncommon property, Tan Lin doesnt comment on the images themselves, except rarely and obliquely. Nominally that lets the images resonate with the text, but it also frees him, and his readers, from more intense engagements with visual material. [return][return]Im also put off by the aesthetic theorizing, which I liked in Blipsoak01. A large portion of this book is aesthetics (or non-aesthetics, or anti-aesthetics, or inaesthetics). It is philosophic in the way that Kundera often was, so that the book sometimes appears to exist for the sake of slightly decorated and patterned philosophic musings. When Tan Lin writes at length about his aesthetic positions, they seem much more commonplace than in Blipsoak01: although he mentions Duchamp, he is clearly in line with current relational aesthetics, uncommitted institutional critique, and post-fluxus practice as in Nicolas Bourriaud, Dominic Willsdon, and others. Its a very familiar position in the art world.

This book is developed from an ethnographic case study which investigated Chinese adolescents construction of their gender identity and the way it is negotiated in the course of learning English as a foreign language (EFL) from a sociolinguistic, sociocultural and sociopsychological point of view. It documented the unseen connections between the micro-level of the students face-to-face verbal interactions and the macro-level of the role of learning EFL that can play in students construction and negotiation of their gender identity. The book aims to help both teachers and students to develop a more comprehensive view of English learning as a means to social and educational development. On the whole, the study showed that second language learning pedagogy which integrates CLT can be used as an important tool to open up opportunities for the improvement of gender awareness in cultures where gender and sex are not linguistically differentiated. It demonstrated that the EFL class can be used as a means of opening up a space where adolescents can become aware of gender and play around with this awareness. It can be educationally valuable with regard to making students and teachers think about a number of social and intercultural issues alongside cross-linguistic issues. The fieldwork of the research showed that interventions directed at attracting students attention to gender roles and the way they behaved in interactions in English highlight an educational function of the place of EFL in the curriculum which is so far unrecognised in China.
